New Mexico and U.S. Create New Legal Sports Betting Regime

Most of the sports betting activity in the United States takes place in Las Vegas, but there are many outlying areas where it can be done successfully. Last updated in November 2021. Already several teams that used to be in the dark have jumped into the sports betting game. One of those teams is Minnesota.

In the fall of 2021 Minnesota became the first legal sports betting destination in the state. Owners of the new Minnesota Vikings owned by Zynga purchased the exclusive rights to play there. The football team played at the Metrodome, now named the Target Field. A number of other teams have since become licensed players in the state. One of the new owners is Bill Davidson, who is also the founder and managing partner of the now closed W.P. Carey stadium in New Jersey.

Until recently Minnesota was one of the last states to open the sports betting door. Since the 2021 election season has begun Minnesota has again become a favorite destination for political junkies and campaign contributors. Recent reports by the Minnesota Office of the Secretary of State’s office indicate that Gov. Dayton has raised millions in personal contributions and has hired on numerous consultants to help him win the governorship.

The interesting thing about Minnesota’s potential role as a gambling destination is that it actually could happen. The Minnesota House just recently passed a bill which would authorize the state’s Department of Revenue to allow sports betting on publicly funded events. The bill now heads to the state’s Senate, which could vote on it as soon as this week. If the bill passes, it will face an immediate constitutional challenge in court.

Proponents of the new law say it will encourage gambling and sports betting across the state’s many casinos. The new law would also prevent cities and municipalities from enacting ordinances that would regulate sports betting. Cities in Minnesota like Minneapolis and St. Paul have debated whether to pass laws that regulate gambling at city-owned facilities. While some cities like Minneapolis and St. Paul do already have laws in place, other areas are still considering passing similar regulations. The House bill would prevent municipalities from preempting state law.

The push to legalize sports betting in Minnesota comes as the state grapples with what’s considered one of the worst recessionary economic periods in decades. Many economists expect a severe decrease in revenue due to decreases in professional sports betting across the board. The bill’s sponsor, State Representative Jimlund, DFL-MIN, anticipates the loss of revenue during the next two to three years. “The loss of Minnesota’s six major sports franchises would be a painful circumstance for all Minnesotans, but particularly painful for the state’s residents, who so strongly support their state’s professional sports teams,” he said. He added that he hopes to continue the dialogue with fellow state lawmakers to create a consensus to legalize sports betting. He sees the bill as an opportunity for the state to bolster its recovery.

According to the sports betting legislation, approved by the state legislature in September, a new Mexico sports betting law will go into effect on January 1, 2021. The new Mexico laws are expected to affect all sports betting activity, including soccer, baseball, and softball. Minnesota and the rest of the U.S. will soon be included in a group of states with new federal protections for sports betting. The House and Senate voted in favor of the new Mexico sports betting legislation in September.

According to the new law, which goes into effect on January 1, 2021, a new five-sports gaming Commission will be established with a commissioner and board of directors. Each commission will then elect members to the Commission. Commission members will not be permitted to serve as sports betters or gaming judges. However, they can still serve on the gaming commission and any other position that come open within the organization. According to the new law, if a sports bettor wins a game, the money wagered on that game will then be awarded to the sports bettor through payment of commission fees.
